There has in recent years been a noteworthy
development of public works at Macao, extensive dredging and reclamations costing $15,000,000 have completed the
new Port Works and provided 300 acres of reclaimed
land services.
The breakwaters, 4 miles in length,
enclose the new Harbour, which can be used by vessels
drawing up to 20-ft. Electric power has been installed
in the islands of Taipa and Colowan. There has been
considerable building development and drinking water
has been brought into the city of Macao by pipeline from
Colowan Island. There are regular steamship services
with Portuguese India, Goa and the African Colonies and
the potential value of Macao as a distributing centre
for Portuguese products is being more and more appreciated.
One of the Colony's principal industries may be classed
under the heading of entertainment, (horse racing,
greyhound racing, cinemas and other less reputable
forms of entertainment) which draw large numbers of
visitors to the colony. There is a motor road from Macao
across the neck of the peninsula into Chinese territory
which is said to be likely to prove of great commercial
value. There is a regular steamship service from Macao
to Canton and Hong Kong (Canton 88 miles and Hong Kong
40 miles), and there is telegraphic and wireless communica-
